RMI (Responsible Minerals Initiative)

The Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI) is an initiative of the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA) that provides companies with tools, resources, and audit programs to support responsible mineral sourcing from conflict-affected and high-risk areas. RMI owns and maintains the CMRT, EMRT, and AMRT reporting templates, operates the Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP) audit program, and maintains the smelter conformant/active/eligible facility lists. RMI was formerly known as the Conflict Free Sourcing Initiative (CFSI).

RMI is the operational hub of the conflict minerals compliance ecosystem. Its tools and programs are referenced in Dodd-Frank compliance guidance, the EU Conflict Minerals Regulation, and customer requirements globally. The European Commission formally recognized RMI’s RMAP as equivalent to EU Regulation (EU) 2017/821 requirements in October 2025. Companies should use RMI resources including: CMRT/EMRT templates (free), RMAP conformant facility lists (free), and CMRT completion guidance.

A mid-size electronics manufacturer builds its entire conflict minerals program around RMI resources: uses CMRT 6.6 for supplier outreach, verifies smelter status on the RMAP facility list, and references RMI training materials for staff education. The manufacturer’s annual conflict minerals report cites RMI’s RMAP as its primary audit standard.
